Migraine headaches are a condition that affects a large number of people, it is referred to as a civilization disease, and the tendency to it is often hereditary. So how to fight this troublesome disease? Are there any specificities that can alleviate the symptoms? Are we doomed to pain? In this article, we will try to answer these questions.

What is migraine / migraine headaches?

Many people who do not have migraine headaches and have never experienced migraine headaches often cannot understand the distress and discomfort they can cause. As already mentioned, migraine affects a large part of the population, so the problem is not just incidental. Therefore, it is worth considering this issue, especially if we experience a particularly intense headache.

So what is migraine? It is a chronic, neurological condition, manifested primarily by attacks of intense headache, very often it is also accompanied by other ailments, such as photophobia, hypersensitivity to sounds, nausea and vomiting, numbness of the limbs or speech disorders, and in extreme cases even loss of consciousness . Associated symptoms, such as spots in front of the eyes, visual field disturbances or distortions, verbal, sensory and motor disturbances are called aura and are found in 25% of patients. Often, the appearance of an aura heralds a headache aftermath and lasts for about an hour, although some patients struggle with it longer, sometimes up to several hours. A patient with migraine, especially one with aura, may experience attacks so severe that they are unable to function normally.

Migraine attacks most often take place in four phases:

  • the precursor phase
  • aura
  • headache post-
  • paroxysmal phase

The length of the attack is always an individual matter, some patients experience short but intense attacks, others suffer longer, but the pain can be milder. The length and degree of severity of the ailments largely depends on the speed of actions taken already at the moment of the teasers phase, a quick reaction may help to survive an attackthat will not gain strength.

It should also be mentioned that migraine, as a neurological problem of various origins, requires consultation with a doctor and diagnosis.

Causes of migraine (migraine headaches)

This question is neither easy nor clear-cut, but it can certainly help eliminate the “risk factors” in many cases. The causes of the disease are not fully known, doctors say that the occurrence of migraine attacks may be related to the excessive secretion of serotonin – a neurotransmitter that ensures the proper tension in the blood vessels in the brain, as a result of which these vessels shrink and relax rapidly. Genetics is also an important factor in the risk of migraines; if there have been cases of migraines in a given family, we may also be burdened with it. The first symptoms often appear in children, already in the pre-puberty phase.

When it comes to external factors that may contribute to the triggering of migraine or aggravate it, the following should certainly be mentioned:

  • short-term and chronic stress with high intensity
  • exhaustion, heavy burden on the body,
  • consumption of certain foods (e.g. ripening and mold cheeses, products with a high content of salt)
  • alcohol (e.g. red wine consumed in excess)
  • atmospheric factors (e.g. rapid changes in pressure)
  • hormonal changes (especially in women)
