The growing number of studies confirming the beneficial effects of cannabinoids on the human body, at the same time pointing to new positive aspects of their use, has recently aroused widespread interest in this topic in the sports community. against injuries, increasing endurance and relieving training pains.

The confirmation of the safety and beneficial properties of CBD in the context of physical exercise is the decision of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), which on January 1, 2018 officially announced the removal of cannabidiol from the list of doping agents on which it was listed since 2004. The professional MMA fighter NateDiaz, who used vaporized CBD during the press conference after the fight, undoubtedly contributed to this. The competitor himself commented on the whole situation: “Cannabidiol speeds up the healing process and prevents inflammation […] so it is good to use it before and after the fight.”

Another example of the use of cannabinoids in professional sports are players from the American football club Broncos, who used CBD to ease pain after games and accelerate recovery. So we see that the natural ingredients of hemp find their supporters at the highest levels of professional sport.

CBD supports the building of muscle mass

The most important processes in the context of building muscle tissue is the stimulation of the production of anabolic hormones leading to the building of molecules (muscles) and inhibiting the harmful effects of catabolic hormones leading to breakdown.

One such hormone is cortisol, which reduces protein synthesis and prevents tissue growth. Its too high level means that the assumed results in terms of building muscle mass are not achieved despite proper training and diet. Intense, hard training causes it to double its size after just one hour of exercise, which can cause high blood pressure, lower bone density and absorption of muscle tissue.

Cortisol is also useful for the body in many ways. It regulates blood sugar levels, strengthens short-term memory, while in the liver it acts as a removal of toxins from the body. So it is very beneficial, of course, if its level is at the appropriate level. CBD can help you maintain a healthy cortisol balance. According to BrazilianJournal of Medical and BiologicalResearch, CBD directly affects the endocannabinoid system, resulting in a significant drop in blood cortisol levels.

The anxiolytic effect of the substance causes a more balanced mental state, which translates into a greater amount of motivation and willingness to exercise, and physical activity becomes a bit easier, giving us better results.

Cannabidiol also helps achieve deep REM sleep during sleep, when protein synthesis is at its peak. Research conducted at the Department of Neuroscience and Behavior of the Ribeirão Preto Medical School, University of São Paulo on animal models found that CBD increases total sleep duration and lengthens sleep when it is light.

CBD supports fat loss

The scientific journal Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry presents the research of Korean scientists who analyzed the effects of CBD on preadipocytes (immature fat cells). During the study, it was found that cannabidiol stimulates genes and proteins responsible for the breakdown of adipose tissue, reduces the accumulation of adipose tissue by reducing lipogenesis, and increases the number and activity of mitochondria, increasing the body’s ability to burn more calories.

We can divide adipose tissue in the body into two types: white – responsible for storing fat in the body, and brown – responsible for the production of energy and heat through metabolic changes. CBD has been shown to be able to induce the process of converting harmful white fat into brown fat. The increase in brown fat content is associated with an increase in glucose tolerance, which in turn contributes to an increase in resistance to diabetes and disorders of lipid processing.

CBD oil increases the endurance of the body during long workouts. By

practicing various types of sports, in most cases, including strength training, it is necessary to be in good condition, which will enable us to conduct long and effective workouts. Colloquially, we can call it having good endurance.

In order to achieve this state, osotrainers often build this endurance by running, using an elliptical cross trainer, going for long walks or cycling, so they do the so-called “Cardio”. During such an effort, we feel the so-called “Flow”, and according to the scientific literature it is the syndrome of “runner euphoria”. During its operation, we feel more focused, elevated and reduced pain sensation. This effect is related to the action of the main endocannabinoid, anandamide, which, as the main neurotransmitter, regulates the endocannabinoid system.

CBD oil in trace amounts of THC, this compound activates the receptors of this system. CBD, on the other hand, inhibits the activity of enzymes that break down anandamide in synapses – thanks to which its action is longer and more intense.

So we come to the conclusion that using CBD before training is very beneficial for endurance trainers. We become more durable, energetic and focused, and the anti-inflammatory effect protects us against painful contractions.

CBD helps with inflammation and muscle pain

By carrying out heavy training, whether at the gym or anywhere else, we can lead to inflammation, swelling, reduction of range of motion and muscle and joint pain.

In such situations, we usually get used to traditional, common painkillers, such as pills or other chemical drugs. Like synthetic drugs, hemp products inhibit the formation of inflammatory tissue hormones. An important difference, however, is the fact that they do not have a negative effect on organs such as the heart, kidneys or liver, which cannot be said about chemical drugs.

In addition, CBD dissuades us from wanting to use the more harmful and negative conventional forms of pain relief.

Preclinicals suggest that cannabis preparations are helpful in reducing various types of arthritis. In animal studies, CBD was effective in blocking the progression of arthritis. This is because cannabidiol plays a significant role in modulating the immune system.

In the case of muscle pain, a good solution is to use CBD in the form of creams, ointments or spot oils in the areas of discomfort. They will relieve pain, strengthen the elasticity of the fibers and accelerate the regeneration and healing process of these places.

CBD helps in the treatment of insulin resistance.

Insulin resistance is a condition with increased insulin production and its elevated concentration and, at the same time, reduced effect on target tissues such as muscle and adipose tissue. Problems with insulin sensitivity lead to a variety of diseases and problems, such as type II diabetes, increased water retention in the body or a tendency to gain weight. It also contributes to the occurrence of an increased amount of inflammation, weakened immunity and chronic fatigue.

A five-year study found that osoregular cannabidiol users had 16% lower fasting cholesterol and insulin levels than those who had never been exposed to CBD. Moreover, the level of insulin resistance in people using cannabis products was lower by 17% compared to the second study group.

The relationship between chronic inflammation and insulin resistance has been established by many studies. As CBD has anti-inflammatory properties, it acts on the immune and cardiovascular systems, improving their efficiency, and consequently contributing to cell growth and improving sugar metabolism. Hence the conclusion that regular use of CBD effectively helps in the fight against insulin resistance and prevents more serious diseases such as, for example, type II diabetes.
